Zurich has one of the most active chess scenes in Switzerland: long-established clubs, weekly club nights and a growing number of casual meetups in cafés and parks. Whether you are a complete beginner, new in town, or a FIDE-rated tournament regular, you will find a board and an opponent here — and you don't need to speak German to join.

Most clubs offer beginner courses or open training, there are dedicated chess schools for kids, and ambitious players will find titled coaches. Zurich and its surroundings regularly host FIDE-rated tournaments: classical Swiss-system opens, rapid and blitz weekends, and team championships. These tournaments are open to all levels; a FIDE ID or national rating card is usually required.
