How to find and join a chess club in Germany

Germany has 1689 chess clubs in the German Chess Federation (DSB) register, and nearly all of them welcome new members, beginners included, no rating required. The Chessmates directory lists them by town with venue and website (in German), and a first visit is almost always free.

How do I find a chess club in Germany?

The fastest way is a directory: Chessmates lists 1689 clubs from the German Chess Federation (DSB) register sorted by town, each with its venue, website and region. Nearly every club welcomes new members; a short email, or simply showing up on club night, is enough.

How much does chess club membership cost in Germany?

Most clubs charge roughly 60 to 150 euros a year, with reductions for juniors and students. That covers the weekly club night, internal tournaments and the team competitions; the national rating (DWZ) and FIDE rating follow automatically from rated games.

Do I need to speak German to join?

No. Chess needs no language, and clubs in the larger cities are used to international members; English is usually enough to get along. The board does most of the talking.

Do I need a rating to join?

No. Clubs accept complete beginners; knowing the rules is enough. DWZ (the German national rating) and a FIDE rating are earned automatically once you play rated games; they are never a requirement.

How does a first visit work?

You show up at club night at the time and venue listed, usually without registration. Someone greets you, finds you an opponent at your level, and the first evening is almost always free. Membership only comes up once you decide to stay.

Can I play chess in Germany without joining a club?

Yes. Many cities have open chess meetups in cafés and parks, free and without sign-up. The Chessmates app also finds players near you for a casual game, a good bridge before committing to a club.
